The joint initiative of the City of Gdańsk and Międzynarodowe Targi Gdańskie is intended to enable residents of the Piecki-Migowo district to buy fresh fruit and vegetables from regional farmers. The weekly Saturday markets will be accompanied by the popular "Flea Market". The event was due to run until the end of October, but it proved so popular that, in its fruit-and-vegetable form, it has been extended until 16 December.
The Piecki-Migowo district is seeing a steady rise in new housing developments and residents. Despite the area's dynamic life and vigorous growth, its residents remain attached to traditional forms of trade such as local markets. That's why, on a pilot basis this year, every Saturday in September and October, from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m., at the square at the junction of Bulońska street and Rakoczego street, stalls with fresh produce will be set up.
The intention of Gdańsk's city authorities is for healthy fruit and vegetables from local farms to be available to as many residents as possible, with the sales venues fostering community meetings and integration.
– The city's strategy for the development of markets and marketplaces points to the need not only to preserve traditional forms of trade, but, most importantly, stresses the need for their development, for example in the form of so-called "pop-up markets", popular in Western Europe. We hope that further points of sale for fresh fruit and vegetables and preserves from regional farmers and producers will soon be able to appear on the map of Gdańsk – stresses Piotr Kryszewski, Deputy Mayor for Municipal Services.
In addition, in response to the expectations of district residents, a "Flea Market" will be held alongside the stalls, where everyone will be able to bring and sell "something of their own". Thanks to this initiative, toys, books, clothes and other items can find a new owner and get a second life. The organisers already warmly invite everyone – from children to seniors – to take part in the "Flea Market". Special tables will be available for those interested, where everyone will be able to display and sell their belongings.
In the format described above, the event ran until the end of October. However, it proved so popular that it was extended until 16 December. The Market's operating hours were changed to 9.00 a.m.–2.00 p.m., and its format was changed – it was reduced to the fruit-and-vegetable zone.
