Strabag will build the swimming pool in Wrzeszcz. Work to start as early as July

The investment long awaited by residents of Dolny Wrzeszcz is becoming a reality. On 18 June 2025, an agreement was signed with the general contractor – STRABAG – for the construction of a modern sports, recreation and services facility at the junction of Legionów Avenue and Kościuszki Street. The document was signed by Jakub Trojanowski, Director of General Construction at STRABAG, and Andrzej Bojanowski, President of the Gdańsk International Fair. The project is an important part of Gdańsk's strategy to develop as a modern, open and sustainable city.

The signing of the agreement with the general contractor is the result of a tender procedure announced in February 2025 for the general contractor to build a modern sports, recreation and services facility with a swimming pool at Legionów Avenue and Kościuszki Street in Gdańsk. The procedure was carried out by the investor, the Gdańsk International Fair. STRABAG submitted the most advantageous bid. The signing of the agreement is the final step before the start of the investment that residents of Wrzeszcz have been waiting for. Construction begins as early as July 2025, and the value of the investment is nearly PLN 77 million.

– Wrzeszcz is changing. Last year we opened sports and recreation facilities at Primary School No. 49. Today, the agreement was signed with the swimming pool's general contractor, Strabag. The construction of the facility fits into the strategy of the city of Gdańsk, a modern, sustainable city, accessible to everyone. I think it will bring joy not only to the residents of Wrzeszcz, but to the whole of Gdańsk. I remember that, as a councillor from this very district No. 4, together with other councillors we lobbied hard for a swimming pool to be built in this exact spot. Residents pointed to a shortage of swimming pools in this area. I am all the more pleased that we will be able to meet their expectations – says Emilia Lodzińska, Deputy Mayor of Gdańsk.

Scope of the investment and technical details

The contract will be carried out under the "build" formula, using the traditional system. According
to the schedule, construction work will continue until the end of December 2026. Handovers will follow, so that around summer 2027 the modern sports, recreation and services facility can be officially opened.

– As a councillors' club, we lobbied for the development of swimming pool infrastructure in Gdańsk. In the previous term we managed modernisation; in this one we want to start and finish building swimming pools – here in Wrzeszcz, as well as on the border of Brzeźno, Letnica and Nowy Port. I am glad that the initiative for a swimming pool on Legionów Avenue is entering the implementation phase – believes Cezary Śpiewak-Dowbór, Gdańsk councillor.

– When I was a district councillor from Wrzeszcz Dolny, we began the discussion of where a swimming pool in Wrzeszcz should be built. Today, despite many difficulties – often things beyond our control – we are signing the agreement for the construction of this facility, which will be available both to pupils of local schools, but importantly, we have managed to agree with the future pool operator that there will be discounts for Gdańsk residents with the Resident's Card – adds the councillor Krystian Kłos.

The building will consist of three above-ground storeys and one underground storey. The structure of the facility, including walls, beams and columns, will be built using reinforced concrete technology, while the roof will be made of wood. The complex will be divided into three functional zones: sports and recreation, swimming pool, and services.

Technical parameters of the facility:

  • cubic capacity: 25,300 m³
  • usable floor area: 6,700 m²

The swimming pool and the learner pool will be built using stainless steel technology, together with modern solutions such as a movable floor.

Pool specifications:

  • swimming pool: 12.50 m x 25.00 m, depth 1.80–2.20 m, water surface area 312.5 m²
  • learner pool: 6.00 m x 10.00 m, depth 4.00 m, water surface area 60.0 m²

The sports and recreation zone will also feature a sauna and bathhouse complex, as well as a salt wall.

– The City of Gdańsk is building the facility on Aleja Legionów, and is doing so through the hands of a proven and organisationally efficient body, namely Międzynarodowe Targi Gdańskie. Roughly 12 months have passed since the decision to launch the tender, and today we already have the signing of the contract with the general contractor. I'm pleased that the city is gaining more sports infrastructure – says Łukasz Świacki, Gdańsk councillor.

Cooperation with residents

Importantly, the investment department of Międzynarodowe Targi Gdańskie has already held talks with the general contractor regarding the organisation of the construction site and the coordination of activities with the surrounding communities and Primary School No. 49, which is adjacent
to the investment. On 16 June 2025, the first meeting was held with all interested parties – including the general contractor, the contract engineer and the pool operator – to discuss the details of the project, its progress
and the schedule of works.

Preparations for construction

As part of the preparations for the pool's construction, in April 2024 Międzynarodowe Targi Gdańskie put into use new sports infrastructure at Primary School No. 49 – two multi-purpose pitches, a new playground, a running track, as well as green areas and lighting. This investment, worth over PLN 2 million, not only compensated for the loss of the existing pitch but significantly raised the standard of the space.

– We are a large, international concern, the second-largest construction company in the country, but that doesn't change the fact that we focus on locality. Building the pool in Gdańsk's Wrzeszcz district for pupils and residents fits perfectly with our strategy. And that pleases us greatly. There's a good atmosphere here, and I hope it will also be pleasant at the completion of construction, and that we'll soon be able to enjoy all the amenities of the emerging facility – says Jakub Trojanowski, Director of General Construction at Strabag.

Project partners

It is worth recalling that the architectural design of the new facility in Wrzeszcz was created by MD Biuro Architektoniczne – a team that has excellently combined functionality with a modern form.

Carrying out construction projects of this scale requires precise planning, supervision and coordination. That is precisely why, in April, a contract was signed
with the Contract Engineer – Przemysław Marszałkowski, who will be responsible for overseeing the schedule, budget, and maintaining the highest technical standards throughout the project's implementation.

Two months earlier, a 20-year lease agreement was signed with Beauty Derm Instytut, a company from Gdańsk – an experienced operator with 15 years in the recreational services market. Under the agreement, the company committed, among other things, to making the pool available at designated times for school classes and activities for senior citizens.

– Last year we promised that we would try to launch the investment by the end of 2024. Unfortunately, we encountered numerous complications, which councillor Kłos mentioned. It was a very complicated process – removing utility clashes, building pitches that we as a city had not been able to build for 12 years. We overcame them, and from July we are moving into action on the pool construction site. We are in a district of the city that, on one hand, is historic, with a very deep national history, and on the other hand is very difficult in terms of terrain for carrying out a project of this kind. It will require great determination on the contractor's part, including in terms of cooperation with the school – believes Andrzej Bojanowski, president of Międzynarodowe Targi Gdańskie.

– What's also important is that we have a good team: the contract engineer and the operator. I hope we will also have the best contractor. After all, it is recognised as a very good partner in large projects – concludes the president of MTG.
