The city has handed over new sports pitches and a playground to Primary School No. 49 in Gdańsk. This is part of an investment linked to the planned construction of a swimming pool in Wrzeszcz, at the junction of al. Legionów and ul. Kościuszki. Construction will begin in the second half of 2024. The planned cost of the investment is close to PLN 77 million.
Multi-purpose pitches measuring 17×25.10 m and 12×19.40 m with the necessary sports infrastructure, a playground, a running track, an internal road layout with parking spaces, monitoring and area lighting, as well as greenery and site fencing, were handed over on Wednesday to Primary School No. 49 at al. Legionów 11 in Gdańsk. The new infrastructure will serve the school's pupils and teachers from the current school year.
"Very good news for Wrzeszcz. We are delighted that Primary School No. 49 has gained modern spaces for sport. But this is not the end, because within the next 2 years — probably by the end of 2026 — construction will be completed of a swimming pool serving not only the school but also the Wrzeszcz community," said Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, Mayor of Gdańsk, during the briefing
The construction of new sports and recreational infrastructure is part of the investment linked to building a swimming pool at the junction of al. Legionów and ul. Kościuszki. The site where the swimming pool in Wrzeszcz will be built previously housed the Primary School 49 pitch and playground, which were already badly worn and in need of a thorough rebuild.
"I would like to warmly thank everyone who contributed to getting this facility ready. I also know that, as someone at the start of my professional journey, I have the support of wonderful councillors who respond quickly to every request. I know there are helpful people in the Education Department who help me carry out the tasks ahead of me as well as possible. I am counting on the pool, in future, enriching the educational offer of the district and our school," said Marta Badowska, headteacher of Primary School No. 49
The school will also gain the use of a climbing wall — it will be built once construction of the swimming pool is finished, as it will be located on its grounds. The cost of the investment linked to building the pitch and playground was PLN 2.2 million net.
"Wrzeszcz is celebrating today, and so are the children who attend Primary School 49. This is the last pitch in Wrzeszcz that was waiting for modernisation, and today this important day has arrived. It was also one of the more difficult investments to carry out. It is worth highlighting the determination and commitment of the school's two headteachers, for which I am very grateful. The second very important matter is the construction of the swimming pool, not only for the Wrzeszcz district, not only for children from nearby schools, but also for the residents of the whole of Gdańsk," said Emilia Lodzińska, Gdańsk City Councillor.
"A great deal of work went into this pitch, but the attitude shown in particular by the headteachers of Primary School 49 shows that where there's a will, there's a way, and the results are clearly visible. I am also pleased about the swimming pool. Together with the Parents' Council, we took part in selecting the pool's operator. It will operate in the mornings for School Number 49 and nearby schools, and will later be made available to residents. One of my proposals was to prepare a special offer for holders of the resident's card, so that the terms would be even more favourable and as many Gdańsk residents as possible could make use of this investment," added Krystian Kłos, Gdańsk City Councillor.
"I would like to thank the former headteacher, Renata Jurkiewicz, and the current acting headteacher, Marta Badowska, whose determination made it possible to carry out this investment," said Wojciech Błaszkowski, Gdańsk City Councillor. "I would also like to thank the Mayor, who, despite a difficult financial situation, promised to deliver this project. Today we are waiting for the pool, which will soon appear. I encourage young people, but also older residents, to make use of this facility as often as possible."
Swimming pool in Wrzeszcz
The main investment is the construction of a sports and recreation facility comprising: a swimming pool, fitness rooms, a sauna and spa complex, and space intended for commercial lease along with conference rooms.
"Everyone has their place in the life of the city, including in the development and operation of infrastructure. As MTG, we work in the meetings and leisure industry, and that is exactly why we are here," says Andrzej Bojanowski, President of the MTG Management Board. "The new infrastructure, which will be handed over in the third quarter of 2026, is not just a swimming pool. It will also include, among other things, a hall that the school will be able to use for its classes. I believe that by changing this infrastructure we will begin a further stage of development here — not only for the school, not only for the immediate neighbourhood, but for the whole district," he adds.
The 3-storey pool building will have the following functions:
- a 25-metre, 6-lane sports pool with a movable floor
- A 6×10 m learner pool with a movable floor down to a depth of 3.4 m and multimedia attractions
- A spa zone connected to the pool, with a sauna area (6 saunas) offering a range of attractions, including 3 hydromassage tubs, relaxation rooms and massage rooms (5-7 rooms)
- Restaurant accessible from al. Legionów
- A multi-purpose teaching and conference room, capable of hosting physical activities such as corrective gymnastics for children, rehabilitation or yoga
- Three service floors with a rehabilitation function (medical practice rooms) or office function, with a total area of nearly 1,500 m²
On the investment site, unused pavilions have already been demolished, the area has been fenced off, and the topsoil layer has been removed along with clearance works. In place of the trees removed for construction, 110 new ones will be planted. The next stage will be submitting the building permit application – Q2 2024. Construction will begin in the second half of 2024.
The City of Gdańsk entrusted the role of investor to Międzynarodowe Targi Gdańskie SA. MTG has the human resources with the relevant knowledge and experience in building, fitting out and managing large-area facilities. These have proven themselves both in the construction of AMBEREXPO and of the temporary hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. MTG also has experience as an operator of public infrastructure, along with the appropriate know-how and technical facilities to take on this new investment — the project to build a sports and services complex at al. Legionów and ul. Kościuszki. The building design was produced by MD Biuro Architektoniczne, while preparatory works are being carried out by the firm Correcto. The planned cost of the investment is close to PLN 77 million.
