St Dominic's Fair is not just three summer weeks of a cultural and trade festival. The fair's organisers, together with the city centre manager, have begun initiatives for the benefit of residents who neighbour the event. The first step was replacing some of the benches on Heweliusza Square.
It is a tradition, during preparations for St Dominic's Fair, to hold meetings with residents of the city centre, at which the schedule of activities related to the event is presented, along with a detailed description and its aims. People who live next to the fair and experience it every day also share their observations and comments. During the last meeting in 2023, the fair's organisers — Międzynarodowe Targi Gdańskie — following consultations with the city centre manager, Monika Nkome Evini, and residents, proposed and then approved an initiative for the benefit of the event's neighbours.
Its debut took the form of replacing some of the benches by Heweliusza Square — one of the places that is heavily used 
by the fair, and one worth refreshing before the new summer season.
In line with these plans, in March 2024 MTG began replacing the benches at the designated location. In the central part of the square, by the Hevelius monument, 14 new benches appeared in place of those that were damaged or worn. The bench design was selected and approved by the Gdańsk Roads and Greenery Authority. The benches feature the distinctive St Dominic's Fair logo.
The organisers want to continue the initiative in the coming years. Work is currently under way on a multi-year plan setting out MTG's activities for the benefit of the city centre and its residents.
This year's St Dominic's Fair will take place from 27 July to 18 August. More at jarmarkswdominika.pl
